Trip

In the beginning of February we took a trip to visit some friends and see the work they are doing. It was an eight day trip and it was really hard for me to pick from the 500 pictures we took. We had an amazing time, here is what we did....
We packed the car and headed out on a Friday morning at 5:30am!
The kids were very excited!
We drove out of the city in the dark and watched the sunrise
and the countryside changed so much before our eyes
Our first stop to visit friends and see them in action working with believers and the church there
I love these pictures of the this man reading his Bible and
this little boy looking through the pictures of the Bible stories
I loved watching my kids interact with the other missionaries kids and the tribal kids
The kids loved to have their pictures taken and to see them on the screen of the camera
Jamen got to pick some pineapple, the plants are behind him
After a few days we visited another location, once again the countryside changed even though it was only about 3 hours away
At this new location we didn't stay with a family, we had a little house without pluming and just before we got there they put up solar panels and we did have a light! But we had to get all our water out the community well for drinking, cooking and bathing. The kids really enjoyed this process
On our way we crossed some scary looking bridges, yes we crossed this in the car
We did some hiking
and walking

Jamen got involved with the kids when it was time to color pictures, can you find him?
We visited friends of the missionaries

Jamen like playing games with the boys

Jonas took baths in the bucket
We visited a waterfall
and helped in anyway we could

We had a great time, I can't tell you how great it was to see us a family doing things together and seeing team work and seeing the stars!!! If you want to know more, email and I'll tell you more! Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Goodbyes and Good Times

January went by very fast for me. I am happy to say that my goal of getting up at 5:30 is going very well. I had few days that it was hard due to late nights or sick kids. But I am actually enjoying my 1.5hr of time to myself, with the Lord, with my husband, and cup of tea! I haven't been able to get together with my neighbors  that has been disappointing, but I am finding other ways to get in language time and I still visit with them when I go to their store. For now I feel like we have found a good balance of life and study, some days are better than others but its going well. The Lord continues to challenge my thinking in how to do ministry as a family, how to teach my kids and work as an effective team with my husband.

Some other highlights of January are as follows...
Kids dressed up for church
We helped a family move, they are heading into the tribe some time this year and we were very excited to help them move but sad as well to see them go. They have been good friends a great encouragement to us!
Jade being silly with Jonas and playing with doilies, they make great hats.
My reading list for the month, but really it will take me the next 6 months to get through all these. I have finished two and I am half way through 4 of them:-)
We spent a great day at a friends farm.
Jamen caught his first fish!
Jade got scared of the fish, this is a not a posed picture.
Jamen made a friend
Jonas had a good time as well
Jamen had fun feeding the cows
Our day at the farm ended in us being very sick, to read more visit the link below.

Well, that was January in a nut shell, check back in two weeks to hear about our Feb and our trip!

New Years Resolutions...lets not and say we did

New Years Resolutions always seem to go badly for me. I make them and can't keep, I don't think I've even made it a week before I give up. Well, this year is going to be different...

This year I am going to get up early...5:30 is my goal. My other resolution is give up some of my personal time, like sleep, hence the getting up early.

I hold on dearly to "my time". For a while I have felt like I have no time for myself and I have all this stuff to do and so for and so on. And the Lord has really been impressing on my heart a few things like, is it really your time, are you using it best, are you willing to sacrifice more so that you can share about Me to those who don't understand. I have been challenged by the life of Paul who, labored day and night so that people could hear (Col. 1:24,29) and he was glad that he suffered. I will be honest I do not rejoice in my suffering, usually I complain and get really grumpy for a while and then I come to grips with it but still not rejoicing in it.

For example, four days before Christmas I hadn't done any shopping. I knew things were tight and we had a little for gifts for the kids. Then a few things came up and I suddenly I was mad at God cause I HAD to go buy flip flops, stickers, notebooks, a hairbrush for Jade and packs of gum for the kids and I couldn't. Never have I been faced with something like that, nothing extra for even flip flops! Then the Lord reminded me it doesn't matter, where is your focus, your kids will be fine, what a great teaching opportunity for your kids, well it turned out to be great teaching opportunity for me. I got really sad, then I was reminded of the things we did have for them, we got Jamen a used game-boy, I made a bowling game (out of 2 liter soda bottles), I had found some free kids DVDs someone was giving away and we had yummy food like cinnamon rolls and hamburgers for grilling on Christmas. I had no reason to be sad.

Well, the next day, after much prayer on my part (and Jon's), the door bell rang and someone (not an American friend or even a really close friend, it was totally a God thing) showed up with gifts for the kids and a Christmas card. Lets just say I cried when I opened the card and cried again when the kids opened their gifts. I was blown away how the Lord provided.

So, the kids got flip flops for Christmas (plus a few more things)! I was prepared for not shopping this year but the Lord said not this year! Its been stuff like that has been such a huge reminder that the Lord provides and I am I willing to be used in a greater way by being willing to give up a little more. You can pray for me in this, my flesh rears its ugly head and says look at all you have already given up, your family, your friends, your physical comfort, your comfort zone, the "american dream" and so forth and so on. But really what is all that? I can tell you right now its not necessary for the Christian walk and following Christ and obeying.

The Lord is constantly growing me and showing me more and more of what needs changing my life. This month seems to be full of growth and areas that need changing. There have been so many other things the Lord has challenged me with like slowing down to take time for my kids, instead of getting grouchy cause I have this list that needs to get done that day. If I have to skip home schooling one morning or yes, even skip Spanish study because my kids need me I need to do it. I have such a huge JOB in training and teaching my kids I cannot afford to mess it up (intentionally). To name a few more things, having a joyful heart (Proverbs 17:22), Jamen told me the other day, "Mommy you are grouchy, you need some joyful heart medicine". Let me tell you that hurt, now in my defense I did have a really bad head cold but still. My kids watch me and what kind of example am I setting.

I also need to be willing to risk looking like a fool more. One part of language learning is feel stupid and like you don't know anything. I fumble around with my words, searching for the right one, trying to tack on endings and in the correct tense and who is talking to whom. It can be very frustrating at times, you start a sentence and realize half way though you can't end it cause you don't know that word, so you quick try to start over, only to say it all in third person when you when you were talking about yourself...HA! One thing I am going to start doing in sitting with my neighbors in the evenings, they sit outside their house just about every night at the same time and I have no reason not to go hang out for a little while. I'll start out slowly but I am praying it will be a start of a growing relationship with them.

Well, that pretty much sums up my December...here are some pics from last month...

We spent Christmas ever with the same family as last year.
The kids weren't as scared of the fireworks this year as they were last year. I gave the little kids glow sticks cause they are too young for the fireworks:-)
The kids had candy canes for the first time. You can't find them down here but some people visiting  from the states brought down a whole bunch for us and the other missionaries here, the kids were thrilled!
Our living room on Christmas morning.
Jamen and his pickles!
Christmas morning we enjoyed cinnamon rolls and instead of turkey for dinner we grilled hamburgers!
Jade and her apron, now she can cook, as she likes to say.
Jonas got his first Christmas gift, which he wanted to eat, he is also eating solids now (quail egg yolks, bananas, applesauce, and peas) and he is waving, sitting up on his own and clapping these days. Oh and cut his first tooth three days ago.
I learned to paint designs on my nails (even with my left hand), great skill for language learning and making friends in the tribe and fun for right now.
Jade turned three a few days after Christmas and we enjoyed it with some friends.
Jade also likes to help feed Jonas his foods

Well, thats the latest, hope you enjoyed it!

November At Our House

This last month has been filled with so many things, but here are the highlights....

Jamen and Jade dressed up for church in front of our Christmas tree.
My maggot soup...what you see are the bugs (the black dots) and yes there were little maggots all cooked into the chicken soup. The dog ate very well for two weeks.
I started homeschooling Jamen and Jade on Nov. 5th. Its been a huge learning curve for me, just cause I've never done it before. I'm learning to better manage my time so that I can teach school, do house hold chores and still study Spanish. Jamen is quick learner so he is keeping me on my toes with school.

One thing about homeschooling that I like is doing crafts, one day I made homemade finger paints.

Another day we made cinnamon salt dough cookies Christmas tree ornaments.

Jonas continues to grow, he is now 7 months old and is finally rolling both ways, he can sit up for all of 5 seconds by himself before tipping over. He loves to be with Jamen and Jade when they are playing especially now that he does roll more cause he can reach things. He is not eating solids yet but he is big (18-20lbs) and health as can be!
We received some fruit snacks in a package the other day and I found it very interesting how my kids organized their snacks. I really love learning styles and how people in general learn. I am loving watching my kids learn and to be able to teach them the way they learn best.
Jamen and Jade with their snow flakes, we tried to make the 100 degree house feel more like Christmas by making snowflakes. I don't think it helps, but it was fun.
Jonas with some cold water in his bottle which he only uses as chew toy, same with his sippy cup.
This year we enjoyed Thanksgiving with friends, what a colorful plates we had! Its hard to eat the same way for holidays here as we use to in the states, most things you cannot find or are very expensive but this year we got close, it was exciting and we were thankful for ever bite!
The desserts were a hit, peanut butter pie, apple crisp, and two kinds of fudge! YUM!

Jamen talking to his Grandparents on Thanksgiving day, it brought tears to my eyes being so far away but it was so great to see my son talking to family.

Stay tuned for next months post...
